You need a full and accurate translation of your birth certificate into English. The translation must match the original document line by line. Nothing should be missing or changed.

It must also include a certification statement from the translator. This statement confirms that the translation is true and correct.

The translator must add their:

  • Full name
  • Signature
  • Contact details
  • Date

It also matters who does the work. You cannot translate your own certificate, and nor can a parent, partner or friend, however good their English is. HM Passport Office expects an independent translator registered with a professional body, or a recognised translation company. In most cases, you only need a certified translation. Notarisation is usually not required for UK passport applications.

The HM Passport Office accepts translations that are properly certified by a professional translator.

Notarisation is only needed if a specific authority asks for it, which is rare for passport use.

Send the long version, the one that names both parents. The short version leaves the parents out and is usually refused, because the Passport Office matches those names against your own papers.
