A typical file holds your birth certificate, your parent's, your grandparent's, and the marriage certificates that join the line together. Sometimes a death certificate as well.

Send them all at once. The comune wants to see the chain unbroken, and one order costs far less than ordering each page as you find it.

Comuni do not all word their requirements the same way, which is why we ask which one you are dealing with before we start.

Some want a sworn or notarised set, some accept a certified translation, and some ask for an apostille on the original first. Forward us whatever the comune or consulate wrote to you and we will match it rather than guess.

If a page we produced is ever sent back, we correct it at no charge.

If your comune has asked for one, get it first. The apostille goes onto the original UK certificate, and then the certificate and the apostille page are translated together as one set.

Doing it the other way round usually means paying for the translation twice. We have had customers arrive after exactly that happened.

The long form, every time. The short one leaves out the parents' names, and a comune checking a descent line needs to see them.

Names changed shape when families emigrated. An Italian record may hold Giovanni where the UK certificate says John, or a surname with an accent the English version dropped.

A clerk comparing two files needs to see that these are the same person. Sending us both versions at the start is the simplest way to make that obvious.

Some Italian offices ask for a notarised set, particularly when documents arrive by post rather than in person. Many do not. Notarisation costs more and takes a day or two longer, so it is worth checking before you buy it.
