Portuguese comes to us from two very different places, and the documents do not look alike. A certidão issued by a Brazilian cartório and one issued by a Portuguese conservatória are set out differently, carry different stamps, and arrive in different formats.
We handle both. Your Portuguese birth certificate translation is prepared in English for HM Passport Office, the Home Office, register offices and universities. Brazilian certidões now arrive digitally with a QR seal, and those are fine too.

UK offices check the same short list on any translated certificate. The wording, the date, a signature by hand, the translator's professional membership, and contact details someone can actually use. All of those sit on every page we send out.
The Portuguese-specific part comes before that. Brazil issues a full certidão de inteiro teor and a shortened breve relato. Only the full one names both parents properly, and that is what a UK caseworker needs to see.
Portugal works a little differently again, and a conservatória certificate may carry averbamentos, later notes added to the margin. Those form part of the record and have to appear in English too.
Send us a photo and we will check which version you are holding before you spend anything.
A certidão ends up in front of several different offices, and each looks for something different on the page. Below we explain what each one is checking, so you can see which situation matches yours. All of them are handled by the same UK birth certificate translation company and to the same standard.
Parents make up the largest share of this work. HM Passport Office reads the certidão to confirm the child's date of birth and, just as importantly, the parents named on it. The inteiro teor carries both; the breve relato does not.
By this point the Home Office already holds a version of your details from an earlier application. The translated certidão has to agree with it, so we take the spelling of your name from your BRP rather than choosing one ourselves.
Spouse, student and work routes all ask for identity papers, and the certidão usually travels with a marriage certificate. Sending both together keeps every name written the same way across the bundle.
A registrar will not open the notice file until your papers are readable in English, and the waiting period does not begin before that. A previous marriage means the divorce decree goes in as well.
Councils confirm a child's age and the parents' names from the certificate when a school place is applied for. Admissions teams and UK ENIC want it filed with your qualifications.
Right to work checks and DBS applications need identity documents an employer can verify. Our UK address and phone number are printed on the page so that they can.
Three steps, and the first takes a minute on your phone. Your original certidão stays with you throughout, which matters because an office here may ask to see it beside the English page.
Brazilian and Portuguese certidões translated for UK offices.
Families from Brazil and Portugal settling in Britain.
ATC accredited; every translator holds ITI or CIOL membership.
One clear price, agreed before you pay, nothing added later.
A certidão carries detail that a British certificate simply does not, and that detail is where files get delayed. Below we go through each one and explain how it is handled, so nothing on your page comes as a surprise.
Sending the shortened version is the most common reason a Brazilian file is returned. We look at which one you have uploaded before quoting, so you never pay to translate a page that cannot be used.
Brazilian certidões almost always arrive with an apostila attached. It carries text of its own and is translated as part of the same certified set, at no extra charge.
Brazil issues certificates electronically now, often with a selo digital and a verification code. Send the full PDF including that page, because the code forms part of the official record.
Portuguese records gather notes in the margin over the years, added when a name changes or a marriage is registered. Those notes are part of the certificate and appear in English on our page.
Portuguese names lose their accents in British systems, and a name without them can read as a different person. We keep them and show your passport spelling alongside.
Every UK office accepts a certified translation and none of them ask for notarisation. If you were about to buy one, we will say so, even though it costs us the sale.
The certidão de nascimento de inteiro teor. It reproduces the full registry entry, including both parents and their details, which is what a UK office matches against the rest of your file.
The breve relato is the shortened version. It gives the child's name, date and place of birth and little else, and on a passport or settlement file that is rarely enough.
Any cartório in Brazil can issue the inteiro teor, and it can be requested online. If you already hold the breve relato, send it and we will tell you honestly whether it will pass.
Yes, noticeably. A Portuguese conservatória sets the page out differently from a Brazilian cartório and uses different wording for the registry sections.
Portuguese certificates also carry averbamentos, notes added to the margin later when something changes, such as a marriage or a name. Those are part of the record and appear in the English version.
Tell us which country issued yours when you order. It helps us set the page out the way a UK caseworker expects to read it.
Yes. Brazil issues most certificates electronically now and plenty of families have never held a paper one.
Send the complete PDF rather than a screenshot, and include the page carrying the selo digital or verification code. That code is part of the official record and a UK office may use it.
We translate from the digital file exactly as we would from a photograph of paper, and it is certified in the same way.
It is translated as part of the same certified set, and there is no extra charge for it.
An apostila page carries text of its own. Leaving it in Portuguese looks like a missing page to whoever is checking your file.
If you have been told to get one but do not yet have it, arrange it on the original certidão first. Doing it after the translation means the stamp lands on the wrong document.
Yes, exactly as they appear on the certidão.
Portuguese names carry accents and the letter ç, and British systems quietly drop both. A name stripped of them can read as a different person to someone comparing two documents.
Send us the spelling printed on your passport as well, and we will show both on the page so nobody has to guess whether they refer to the same person.
Yes, and sending them in one order does more than save money.
One translator handling the set means every name, date and place is written the same way across all of them. A bundle that quietly contradicts itself is exactly what a caseworker looks for.
Most are ready within 24 to 48 hours, and same-day is possible when a passport or biometric appointment is close.
A clean digital certidão moves fast. An older paper one with handwritten averbamentos and stamps across the text takes longer, because every mark has to be read before anything is translated.
Send your deadline with the file. We confirm it before taking payment rather than afterwards.
Send us their letter along with the original and we will correct it at no charge.
It is usually one of three things: no date on the page, no translator details, or a name that did not match the passport. Occasionally it is the breve relato being used where the inteiro teor was needed.
We read what was actually objected to, explain it plainly, and reissue. Most are back with the applicant inside a day.
