How Much Does Birth Certificate Translation Cost in UK?

We could not answer it. Not because we were being difficult, but because a birth certificate translation cost in the UK is not one number. It sits somewhere between £25 and £70 a page, and where it lands depends on things you can see on your own certificate right now.

What a birth certificate translation costs in the UK

Let us start with real ranges rather than a vague “from” price.

Most people reading this need the first row only. A single-page certificate in a common language, needed within two days, sits at the lower end of £25 to £45.

The other rows exist because some people genuinely need them — and a lot of people buy them when they do not. We will come back to that.

Six things that change your translation price

Here is what actually moves the number. Look at your own certificate as you read.

1. The language it is written in. Spanish, French, Portuguese, German and Italian are the ones we handle most, so they sit at the lower end. A rarer language — Dari, Somali, Sinhala, Tigrinya — costs more, simply because far fewer translators work in it.

2. How much is written on the page. This surprises people more than anything else. A clean, printed modern certificate is the cheapest job we do. An older record with handwriting running across it, three registry stamps and notes in the margin takes a translator far longer to read before a single word gets translated.

3. The number of pages. We price per page. If your certificate runs onto a second page, or has an apostille attached, that counts towards the total — although we do not charge extra to translate the apostille text itself.

4. How soon you need it. Standard work goes into the normal queue. Same-day means we move your job ahead of everyone else’s, and that is what the higher rate pays for.

5. Whether a notary is involved. The notary is a separate legal officer with their own fee. It is not our charge and we do not mark it up.

6. How many documents you send at once. This one works in your favour, and it is the biggest saving available to you.

Why sending several documents together costs less

Almost nobody needs one paper on its own.

A wedding file usually holds two birth certificates, sometimes a divorce decree and a Certificate of No Impediment. A citizenship claim by descent can run to six certificates across three generations. A family moving to the UK with three children needs three certificates.

Sent as separate orders, each one is priced, handled, certified and posted on its own. Sent together, they share one price, one certification process and one delivery.

What should already be included in the quote

A cheap headline price means nothing if things get added at checkout. When you compare quotes, check that all of this is inside the figure:

• The translation itself
• The signed certificate of accuracy
• The translator’s signature and stamp
• Standard UK postage for the printed copy
• The PDF by email

The extra costs most people pay without needing to

This is the part worth reading twice, because it is where money actually gets wasted.

In a single month, six people ticked the notarisation box on orders heading straight to HM Passport Office. Three of them wrote in their message that they were unsure whether they needed it. None of them did.

Notarisation is not required by UK offices. Not the Home Office, not UKVI, not HM Passport Office, not register offices, councils, schools or universities. All of them accept a certified translation.

It is needed when a foreign embassy, a foreign court or an overseas registry has asked for it — usually in writing. If nobody has written that down for you, you almost certainly do not need it.

The same goes for an apostille. It is a government fee on top of everything else, and it only applies to documents leaving the UK.

Does the price change by which office?

No, and this catches people out in the opposite direction.

A certified translation for HM Passport Office and one for a university admissions team cost exactly the same. The work is identical: the full document, the certification page, the credentials, the date and signature.

What changes by office is not the price but the advice — whether you need the long certificate, whether an apostille is coming, whether a notary is genuinely required. That is free.

So if a company quotes you more because it is “for immigration” or “for the Home Office”, ask what is actually different about the page. The answer should be nothing.

Getting an accurate quote before you pay

Guessing your own cost from an article only gets you so far. Here is how to get a real figure in minutes.

Send a photo of your certificate, both sides, taken in daylight. Add three short lines:

• Which office asked for it
• The date you need it by
• Whether you have other documents to include

That is enough for a person here to read your document and come back with a fixed price the same working day. Not an estimate that moves later — the figure you will pay.

If your certificate turns out to be the short version, or a page is missing, you hear that at this stage rather than after a refusal. That advice costs nothing either.

Is the cheapest birth certificate translation worth it?

Sometimes, and sometimes not. It depends entirely on what is missing.

A refused application does not just cost you the price of a second translation. It costs you the appointment slot, the waiting time, and occasionally the application fee itself. The three things that cause it are cheap to include and expensive to leave out: the date on the page, the translator’s details, and a name that matches the passport.
